Incorporating test-taking engagement into the item selection algorithm in low-stakes computerized adaptive tests

چکیده
Abstract In low-stakes assessment settings, students’ performance is not only influenced by ability level but also their test-taking engagement. computerized adaptive tests (CATs), disengaged responses (e.g., rapid guesses) that fail to reflect true levels may lead the selection of less informative items and thereby contaminate item estimation procedures. To date, researchers have developed various approaches detect remove after test administration completed alleviate negative impact low engagement on scores. This study proposes an alternative method based Maximum Fisher Information (MFI) considers as a secondary latent trait select most optimal both The results post-hoc simulation studies indicated proposed could optimize improve accuracy final estimates, especially for low-ability students. Overall, showed great promise tailoring CATs Practitioners are encouraged consider incorporating into algorithm enhance validity inferences made from CATs.

Item pool design for computerized adaptive tests
Although item pools are critical to the proper functioning of computerized adaptive tests (CATs), there is very little in the research literature that indicates the desired features of an item pool. Most research articles use an existing item pool that was developed for other purposes. For example, Pastor, Dodd and Chang (2002) used items from NAEP; Wang and Kolen (2001) used an item pool from ...
متن کاملConstraining Item Exposure in Computerized Adaptive Testing with Shadow Tests
Item-exposure control in computerized adaptive testing is implemented by imposing item-ineligibility constraints on the assembly process of the shadow tests. The method resembles Sympson and Hetter's (1985) method of item-exposure control in that the decisions to impose the constraints are probabilistic. However, the method does not require time-consuming simulation studies to set values for co...

15 صفحه اولItem Response Times in Computerized Adaptive Testing
Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) provides a score as well as item response times. However, the investigation of what additional meaning may result from response time information is of particular interest. Data from 5,912 young men on a computerized adaptive test were available. Earlier studies indicate longer response times for wrong responses. This was replicated in larger settings. However...
متن کاملDifferential Item Functioning (DIF) in Terms of Gender in the Reading Comprehension Subtest of a High-Stakes Test
Validation is an important enterprise especially when a test is a high stakes one. Demographic variables like gender and field of study can affect test results and interpretations. Differential Item Functioning (DIF) is a way to make sure that a test does not favor one group of test takers over the others. This study investigated DIF in terms of gender in the reading comprehension subtest (35 i...
